Climate education as a part of environmental and science education is recognized as one of the key issues in education for a more sustainable future. According to the latest PISA results, a performance of Slovak and Croatian pupils in natural science is significantly lower than the average for pupils in OECD countries. Slovenian pupils achieved results above the OECD in natural sciences, however, they enjoy learning about natural sciences much less than their counterparts from other states. Climate education has received little attention globally, and in the EU is still missing. However, climate education is critical to Europe's economic and environmental future and must be an integral part of the school curriculum to "produce" climate literate citizens. A key issue in this process is education at early stages, since younger generations will be future decision makers, entrepreneurs, and leaders.
The project involves 6 partners from 3 EU countries. They incorporate numerous professionals (e.g. climate, renewable resources, sustainable mobility, sustainable consumption, didactic, teaching, curricula development, e-learning development, etc.)
>MAIN TARGET GROUP are pupils, teachers, professional educationalworkers, educators, mentors, trainers, professors at the HEI researching climate related issues (>40 directly involved in implementation, >240 in multiplier events, >5000 indirectly involved in dissemination).
>MAIN FINAL BENEFICIARIES are teachers, pupils, elementary schools, also NGOs dealing with informal education, HEIs – various departments from logistics, enegry, chemical engineeing to pedagogy and didactics.
PROJECT AIMS, OBJECTIVES, ACTIVITIES AND METHODOLOGY
PROJECT AIM is to establish a new cooperation mechanism in Europe where primary school pupils should be motivated to learn while acquiring science competences through applying innovative methodologies used in climate education and to increase the level of digital competences by integrating ICT in the training process, fostering the usage of open educational resources (OER). The aim is to also to empower pupils, make them informed citizens with a knowledge to participate in the societal dialogue, especially in their primary social environment (family, school), with a power to change existing behaviour.
Project activities will be implemented through 10 Work Packages (WPs), resulting in 7 Intelectual Outputs (O1-7), 7 Multiplier Events (E1-7), and 2 Teaching/Training/learning activities (C1, C2).
The project is expected to have a multifaceted impact:
1.) Teachers, educators, teachin experts, teaching professionals, profssors and researchers, students at environmental departments, pedagogy & didactic, etc., will get new knowledge, skills and competences and will be able implement climate related issues within their contents, subjects, and empowering young generations. They will get new links, connections to the experts’ networks, educators, decision-makers, which will allow further networking, generation of ideas, sharing of good practices, opportunities, and establishing new collaborations.
2.) Pupils will get increased capacity through high-quality learning implemented through applying an educational e-learning program, which will provide a better understanding of the relation between the energy, sustainable mobility and sustainable consumption and the climate change. The children will understand that the consequences of their actions are here right now, not in a far future. They will also get intercultural and foreign language skills through taking advantage from the unique opportunity to interact, discuss, share experiences and implement learning activities together with their peers with different cultural and/or social backgrounds and an increased level of digital competences by integrating ICT in the learning process of climate education, foster open educational resources (OER)
3.) SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT will get increased number of conscious pupils who demonstrate more positive attitudes towards EU values (i.e. sustainable consumption) and decrease the negative environmental impacts in local/global environment.
